The 42nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment was mustered into Federal service on October 9, 1861 at Camp Vanderburg, near Evansville, IN. The regiment served in the XIVth Army Corps, Army of the Cumberland, from Kentucky to North Carolina and was link." The command was mustered out in Louisville, KY on July 21, 1865, having been in service 3 years, 8 months, and 11 days. From beginning service to muster-out, there were 1475 men in the rank and file of which 218 were discharged from time to time for disability, and 629 killed, wounded, or captured.
